A model for predicting the quantities of dissolved inorganic nitrogen released in effluents from a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) recirculating water system ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Casellas, Claude.
Fish excretions and the transformation of nitrogen by bacteria in the nitrifying biofilter are two of the main sources of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in fish farms that use recirculating water systems. In this study, the DIN concentration in an experimental Dicentrarchus labrax aquaculture system was calculated using empirical sub-models for fish growth, ingested food and water replacement. The specific growth rate (SGR) (% day(-1)) and the daily feeding rate (DFR) (% day(-1)) both depend on the average weight, W (g), of the fish: Y = aW(b), where Y may be SGR or DFR, and a and b are empirical constants. The DIN discharge rate, Gamma(N) (% of ingested nitrogen), in the experimental aquaculture system was expressed as a function of increasing...

Identification of relevant social impact indicators for a Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) is still difficult and poorly documented (Jorgensen, et al, 2009). In aquaculture systems, the studies based on social aspects are essentially focused on manpower or on conflicts with other activities . In the PISCEnLit project**, we aim to broaden the vision of social impacts of fish farming systems using a new approach of SLCA. We studied fish farming pond systems in France (Lorraine and Brenne) and Indonesia (Tangkit Baru and Kumpeh Ulu in Sumatra island). In this study, we focused on the choice of the impact categories using the participation of stakeholders (James et al., 2002) by the identification and selection of the relevant social impacts to be assessed....

The new sustainable development data repository requires new analysis grids, in particular for factors accounted for in productive system typologies. This paper, based on the aquaculture example, analyses the diversity in aquaculture systems with respect to sustainable development. Various typologies are obtained by evaluating structural and functional approaches integrating variables related to production and regulation systems and to the territorial insertion of fish farms. Categories have been defined on a scale based on a set of five sites, which are representative of a wider range of aquaculture systems. Use of these categories goes beyond the local typologies and prepares a generic meta-typology classification for the systems. This generic...

An approach to co-construct sustainable development indicators in aquaculture ArchiMer

It cannot be said that aquaculture has ignored sustainable development (SD), judging by the number of standards, guides and indicators devoted to it, produced mainly under the aegis of international organizations such as FAO, The European Union and sorne NGOs. However, these continue to be perceived in large measure as constraints rather than as shared objectives by actors. Faced with this situation, which is not specific to aquaculture but on the contrary quite general regardless of sector, context or scale, the authors seek to propose a generic approach that through a collective process, i.e. a co-construction, promotes the implementation and appropriation of SD. What makes this approach original is not only the participatory nature of the construction,...

An integrated fish-plankton aquaculture system in brackish water ArchiMer
Gilles, S.; Fargier, L.; Lazzaro, X.; Baras, E.; De Wilde, Nicolas; Drakides, C.; Amiel, C.; Rispal, B.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture takes advantage of the mutualism between some detritivorous fish and phytoplankton. The fish recycle nutrients by consuming live (and dead) algae and provide the inorganic carbon to fuel the growth of live algae. In the meanwhile, algae purify the water and generate the oxygen required by fishes. Such mechanism stabilizes the functioning of an artificially recycling ecosystem, as exemplified by combining the euryhaline tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii and the unicellular alga Chlorella sp. Feed addition in this ecosystem results in faster fish growth but also in an increase in phytoplankton biomass, which must be limited. In the prototype described here, the algal population control is exerted by herbivorous...

Analyse prospective jusqu'en 2025 de la demande en recherche des pays du sud dans le domaine des "ressources vivantes" - Rapport final ArchiMer
Blancheton, Jean-paul; Fuchs, Jacques; Lacroix, Denis; Lacroix, Nicole; Lemercier, Philippe; Marin, Jean; Antoine, Loic.

This document presents four years of work by an Ifremer's prospective group on the research demand in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture in southern countries by 2025. The study focused on a retrospective assessment of the scientific cooperations conducted by the Institute with southern countries over the past twenty-five years. It was followed by a classic prospective ana/ysis based on the method of scenarios, comp/eted bya research on a wide range of published documents. The analysis identified the most Frequent research demands in five geographic areas of the southern hemisphere. The relevant research themes where Ifremer should intervene as weil as geographic priorities were a/so defined. Two practical conclusions were formulated: on the one hand,...

Aquaculture system diversity and sustainable development: fish farms and their representation ArchiMer

Initiatives for the sustainable development of aquaculture have so far focused on the production of codes of conduct, of best management practices, of standards etc., most of which have been developed by international organisations, the industrial sector and non governmental organisations. They were, to a large extent, produced using a "top down" process and inspired by models from intensive industrial shrimp and sea fish farming (mainly salmon). However, most of global aquaculture production comes from small-and medium-sized farms, essentially in Asia which contributes 92% of the total world aquaculture production volume. The objective of this article is to define the contours of systemic typologies that are able to express the sustainability conditions...

Bio-physiological response of biofilter algal candidate Ulva sp. to different nitrogen forms and fluxes ArchiMer
Moustafa, Yasser T. A.; Bougaran, Gael; Callier, Myriam; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The present study was carried out to study the long term effect of different nitrogen forms and concentrations (14.3, 28.6 and 57.1 µM N-NH4 and 214, 2360 and 3700 µM N-NO3) on the photosynthesis and relative growth rate (RGR) of Ulva sp. for five weeks. Nutrient-enriched seawater was supplied at an exchange rate of between 12.6 and 14.4 volumes per day. Relative growth rate was determined weekly. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution response was measured using 20 - 25 mg fresh weight seaweed incubated in a DW3 measuring chamber for 56 min under different irradiances with light and dark periods alternating every seven minutes. Photosynthetic light-response curves were drawn using 15 photosynthetic oxygen evolution readings normalized to dry weight. Experimental...

Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems are a promising solution for sustainable aquaculture combining nutrient recycling with increased biomass production. An innovative land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) was studied in France for a 60-day experiment. It combined a European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) RAS with two other production systems: high rate algal ponds (HRAP) with natural marine polyspecific algal assemblages, and oysters in separate open tanks. The objective was the assessment of: 1) the efficiency and the stability of the microalgae bioremediation of the effluent from a fish RAS in spring and summer, 2) the abundance and the diversity patterns of the microalgae biomass for consumption in the oyster compartment of...

C/N ratio-induced structural shift of bacterial communities inside lab-scale aquaculture biofilters ArchiMer
Michaud, Luigi; Lo Giudice, Angelina; Interdonato, Filippo; Triplet, Sebastien; Ying, Luo; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
In Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) various chemical compounds (mainly nitrates and organic carbon) accumulate in the rearing water. These chemical substrata regulate the ecophysiology of the bacterial communities of the biofilter and have an impact on its nitrification efficiency and reliability. In the present study chemical and microbiological parameters in static mineral bed (SBB) and moving plastic bed (MBB) biological filters were monitored at increasing C/N ratios ranging from 0 (pure nitrification) to 4 (combined nitrification and organic carbon removal), with the aim to investigate the shift of the bacterial community structure and major taxa relative abundances. Results suggest that the MBB are less subjected to the nitrification...

Comparative growth and welfare in rainbow trout reared in recirculating and flow through rearing systems ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The objective of this study was to compare fish performance and welfare at different stocking densities in a recirculating system (RS) and a flow through system (FTS) under field conditions. During the 77 days experiment, the fish survival rate was high (99.3%) and stocking density increased from 57 to 98108 kg m(-3). No significant differences in growth were observed between RS and FTS until day 56. Later, growth decreased in the FTS, while it remained similar to the farm reference at 50 kg m(-3) in the RS. Final weight was 17% higher in RS than in FTS. The maximum carrying capacity of the RS was near 100 kg m(-3), limited by NO2 increase up to safe level at the end of the experiment, the maximum carrying capacity of the FTS was near 85 kg m(-3), probably...

Comparison of two methods for evaluating waste of a flow through trout farm ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Boujard, Thierry; Aubin, Joel; Moutounet, Yves; Przybyla, Cyrille; Belaud, Alain.
European water legislation enforces increasingly restrictive measures with regards to reduction of water consumption and waste emission in order to minimise the potential environmental impact of the agro industry sector. Fish farms are particularly concerned, but legislation covering effluent discharge varies significantly from country to country. However, recommendations and directives from institutional, national or regional bodies suggest the enforcement of increasingly strict waste reduction measures and the development of waste treatment. Before treatment, it is necessary to evaluate waste production in terms of composition and quantity. The waste quantification methods used today for fish culture systems are either based on direct measurements of...
